Most of us associate water skiing with summertime fun – warm sunshine, beaches and picnics – so it may come as a surprise that water skiing was born in Minnesota in 1922 when Ralph Samuelson used two boards and a clothesline to ski across Lake Pepin. Samuelson has been credited by the American Water Ski Association as the first water ski racer, and the first to jump a ramp and slalom ski, as well as the first to hold a water ski show, too.
Like Samuelson, avid enthusiasts will water ski nearly any time, any where there is an opportunity, even when winter temperatures and chilly water are a deterrent for most people. Fortunately, no matter what city and state you call home, there’s probably a local lake or other body of water where you can get in some ski time, perhaps even practice your gainers and other tricks.
Of course, skiing at the same location all the time can become routine. Add a little excitement to your water time this year by planning a water skiing vacation. Whether you are a novice or expert, you can have some added fun by water skiing at one of these five great locations:
Top U.S. water skiing destinations
1) San Diego, Calif. – With a climate that provides ideal conditions year-round and an average of 264 days of sunshine each year, San Diego is a water skier’s dream. It’s also the home of Mission Bay Park, the largest manmade aquatic park in the U.S. Located just 10 minutes from downtown, Mission Bay offers hardcore skiers the opportunity to take an early morning jaunt around the bay, and still make it to the office on time. In addition, there’s a variety of water ski classes for everyone from the novice to the experienced. For a little more excitement and a change of pace, skiers can cruise around the freight and military ships in San Diego Bay. A variety of local lakes are perfect for those that prefer freshwater water skiing. Plan your trip to San Diego the weekend of Oct. 9,, 2009, and you’ll be able to watch the 5th U.S. Open Water Ski Racing National Championships, too.
2) Austin, Texas – As the Live Music Capital of America, Austin’s earned a reputation as a vibrant city that exemplifies a young, active outdoor lifestyle. For water skiers, the long summers and short winters provide almost year-round opportunity to hit the water. In addition to Lake Austin and Lake Travis, Austin offers several world-class facilities built specifically for water skiers:
- Austin Aquaplex – The Aquaplex is known for “easy” water with a medium-to-high viscosity – great for slalom and jump-ski enthusiasts.
- Guadalupe Ski Plex – Built to accommodate competitive water skiing, Guadalupe is home to three lakes, two slalom courses and a ski jump, as well plenty of boat docks and storage areas.
- Utopia River Ranch – For professional lessons, trek to Utopia River Ranch, a private water ski training facility located near Staples, just outside of Austin.
3) West Palm Beach, Fla. – South Florida, from Key West and Miami to West Palm and Orlando, is a hub of activity for water sports lovers of all kinds. With few days under 70 degrees, South Florida’s Palm Beach County offers ski enthusiasts nearly year-round opportunity, as well as two major water ski attractions and several exciting competitions.
- Okeeheelee Park – The site of choice for beginners and professionals, the facility is a nationally recognized competitive water ski park with five courses that can accommodate everything from traditional to barefoot and kneeboard skiing. If you love to bask in the moonlight, you can take advantage of night skiing on a lit course, too. At under $100, annual permits are more than affordable, too.
- Palm Beach Training Center – Ask Chet Raley, one of the world’s top ski coaches and a national champion, for world-class water ski instruction at Palm Beach Training Center, a private facility located in Boca Raton. Raley offers video coaching for under $100, as well as more expensive clinics for professional skiers.
In addition, South Florida hosts the following water skiing events:
- 3rd IWSF Pan Am Region Wakeboard Championships (Miami)
- Board Up Miami (Miami)
- 4th Big Dawg Slalom Series Championship (West Palm Beach)
- 67th GOODE Water Ski National Championships (West Palm Beach)
4) Pine Mountain, Ga. – Located just outside of Atlanta in Pine Mountain, lays Robin Lake Beach, home of the world’s longest manmade white sand beach. Ranked among Fine Living’s top 10 most unique beaches in the world in 2007, Robin Lake Beach is part of Callaway Gardens resort. Callaway Gardens also hosts the Masters Water Ski and Wakeboard Tournament®, which awards more than $100,000 in winnings each Memorial Day weekend. A great destination for the entire family, the stunning vacation resort offers something for everyone, from water skiing to golf, relaxing spa visits and more.
5) Seattle, Wash. – Although you may not think of the rainy Emerald City as a water skiing hub, it’s the testing ground of choice for popular water ski manufacturers like Herb O’Brien, Pat Connelly, Jeff Jobe and Denny Kidder. With picturesque Mount Ranier as a backdrop, Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish provide the perfect glass.
Of course, these aren’t the only great places to water ski. Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Charlotte, N.C., Sacramento, Calif., Grand Rapids, Mich., and Madison, Wis. are other destinations beloved by ski enthusiasts.
No matter where in the U.S. you are located, there’s a great place to water ski near you. However before you take your boat on a trip or hit the water, be sure it’s protected. However, not everyone chooses the same way to keep fit. A number of people choose to use healthcare products for their health whilst others prefer the good workout a gym can provide. Yet there are more ways than just these to keep in shape.
Of course, your preferred method of keeping fit will depend on what facilities you have access to, but there is still room for variety. One such activity is windsurfing. If you’ve never tried it before, you’ll be surprised at how fun and exciting windsurfing can be. The drawback is that it’s hard to windsurf unless you live near a large body of water. Yet if you do get the chance to windsurf, it’s one that you cannot afford to miss.
The equipment needed for windsurfing is quite basic. All you need is a two to five metre long single sailed sailboard and a lot of passion. However, windsurfing can be difficult for a beginner so it’s worth getting some learning and training from an instructor before tackling the ocean waves.
The sheer joy and thrill of windsurfing is probably the best thing about it. Windsurfing requires the mastery of techniques found in other water sports. It’s a cross between boating and surfing so having skills in both of these will enable you to get the most out of your windsurfing experience. You can enjoy the benefits of both of these disciplines whilst not missing out on anything. You can even experience something quite like the related water sports of water skating or water boarding.
An added bonus that comes from windsurfing is that you’re out in the fresh air. Fresh air is a requirement for healthy living and you’ll get plenty of it when windsurfing. As well as the other physical benefits, windsurfing also helps your cardiovascular system. You will certainly notice the benefits that come with good blood circulation including a more efficient immune system allowing you to stay healthy and enjoy even more windsurfing.
You maybe thinking to yourself, no way could I ever do something like this. You would be surprised with some effort and a little wind you will coasting along in no time.
The thrill, the excitement, the wind in their hair and on their face, the adrenaline and the lungfuls of fresh air can all add to the pull of windsurfing but whatever the reason, windsurfing is an addictive sport. People just can’t stay away from it once they get started, and neither will you once you experience the pleasure of windsurfing.

Surrounded by the waters of Mediterranean, Sardinia is well known for exciting water sports, the most famous being sailing and windsurfing. Discover why Sardinia is the best place to engage in these sports and find out why enthusiasts keep coming back.
Sailing
Although Sardinia’s coastline is an extraordinary sailing destination with hundreds of private coves, stunning beaches and dramatic rock formations, it remains surprisingly unknown to many. Sailors are particularly attracted to the island because of its diverse coastline-from the dunes of the Costa Verde to the deep emerald coves and cliffs of Cala Gonone, no stretch is the same as the next.
There are two winds in Sardinia that ensure the perfect conditions for dynamic sailing: the Sahara wind Chirocco and the Maestrale. The Maestrale mostly blows along the west coast, a very powerful west to northwest wind.
If it is your first time to sail in Sardinia’s waters, you’d better be a very competent sailor yourself or take an experienced skipper with you. Familiarize yourself with the area’s nautical literature and navigational requirements.
A lot of seasoned travelers choose to explore Sardinia aboard a sailboat. They sail along, for instance, from the coasts of Costa Smeralda, to escape the glitz and glamour, so they can discover semi-deserted beaches and time-forgotten villages.
Marinas are superior infrastructure circling the island with a 30-sea mile gap between each establishment. Get yourself a copy of “Beaches and Harbours,” a comprehensive list of the island’s 86 marinas. This guide includes nautical maps and is available for free from Sardinia Tourist Authority (ESIT).
Windsurfing
With winds coming from every direction and a 200-kilometer stretch coastline, Sardinia is heaven for windsurfers and kite surfers. Although North Sardinia is more popular among windsurfers, the southern part of the island also offers optimum winds and wave conditions.
Over the past few years, a stream of windsurfing schools and centers have sprung up at well-loved windsurf spots, offering beginners water sports lessons.
Porto Pollo (also known as Porto Puddu) near Palau is Sardinia’s best windsurfing destination. It is renowned as one of the best in Europe. Porto Pollo’s three main attractions are its expansive white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and consistent winds. Both the Chirocco wind from the Sahara and the Maestrale wind from the northwest blow in the area, thus ensuring constantly perfect windsurfing conditions.
Keep in mind that this is not the right place for beginners. You’re better off somewhere else if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Should you opt to try the sport, you will be totally looked after by your instructors; there is a protected, glassy flat side of the bay where you can test your skills. If not, prepare to be awed by the sight of many colorful sails gliding over glistening waters.

The weather in Dubai is often scorching – if you know anyone who has just come back from there, you’ll no doubt be envious of their sudden tan! But despite the weather being ideal for bronzing on the beach, there’s actually another option: sports in Dubai. Okay, running around in the incredibly hot weather may not be everyone’s idea of a good time but for those that would miss their exercise while taking a Dubai holiday there are plenty of things to do that won’t leave you melting in the sun. Here are the best of them…
Working out
For many, the last thing people want to think about when on holiday in Dubai is pumping iron and working the rowing machine, but with air conditioned fitness centres in all the luxury hotels this needn’t be as gruelling as you’d think. So far, so normal, but in some lodgings, a unique Dubai sports twist is taken on hotel fitness by the coaching by ex-Soviet Union Olympiads, attracted by the wealth of the country.
Elsewhere there are a number of privately owned leisure clubs aimed at the English speaking ex-patriot community, and these have the usual range of swimming pools, tennis courts, squash courts and health spas…
A leisurely round of golf
It’s surprising to see a number of well maintained grass golf courses in a desert city like Dubai, but there they are nonetheless. There are a number of good options for golf players of all abilities, from the ‘beginners need not apply’ courses at the Emirates Majils to the more forgiving Montgomerie. Al Badia is also worth a look, somewhere between the two on difficulty, but with a clubhouse that’s up there with the best in the world making it perfect for some leisurely sports in Dubai.
A refreshing swim
Nothing beats the Dubai sunshine like a refreshing swim, and most hotels will have their own pool to cool off in. If you want something a little more fun, there’s also the Wild Wadi Waterpark at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel complex, which is ideally suited both to kids and the young at heart. With a massive selection of 24 water slides (including the memorable “Jumeirh Sceirah” with speeds of up to 50mph) this is definitely the most fun way to get some exercise on a holiday in Dubai.
Take to the water
Of course you don’t need to just settle for a swimming pool or a water park – Dubai has a natural expanse of water at the Arabian Gulf, and with it a vast range of water sports to enjoy. Jet skiing, water-skiing and that old favourite Scuba Diving are all great ways of staying in shape and having a great time on your holiday in Dubai.
Skiing (!)
If the weather really gets too much for you and you want the opposite extreme, then why not go skiing? No, I’m not about to suggest heading off to another country – you can actually enjoy an amazing indoor ski slope made from real snow! It sounds like an urban legend, but Ski Dubai has made this possible by making ‘real snow’ and then blasting it out into the building which acts as a giant refrigerator – a massive 30 tones of fresh snow are added daily to ensure that the resort’s 5 slopes (covering 22,500m ²) are always fresh and Dubai’s sports enthusiasts are kept happy.
So if you were hoping for an excuse to relax your exercise programme for your trip to Dubai, I’m afraid this isn’t it! There’s plenty to do on holiday in Dubai that won’t leave you massively dehydrated, and it’s well worth checking out!
